Report of the Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities on Care and support for children with disabilities within the family environment and its gendered dimensions

On July 16, the new thematic report on care and support for children with disabilities within the family environment and its gendered dimensions was issued by the Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities.

In the report, Heba Hagrass “highlights barriers faced by children with disabilities and their caregivers to the enjoyment of their human rights, in the absence of adequate support services. She unpacks the gendered dimension of unpaid care and support to children with disabilities in the family environment, mostly provided by women. She outlines diverse measures and services to be implemented as part of inclusive and human-rights based care and support systems and makes actionable recommendations to States to protect the right to family life, prevent institutionalization and promote gender equality”.
