Letter from the Chair

Greetings CCRC subscribers,

As I write this email to you on a warm June afternoon, I can't help but think what a terrible few weeks that have just happened. Like all of you, the CCRC board is disturbed by the findings of the remains of 215 children at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops (see here for our full statement here). We were also shaken by the killing of a young Muslim woman and her family in London, Ontario. And this week, our government is once again in court, fighting against the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal orders relating to Indigenous children's welfare. We call on Canada to fully comply with the CHRT order, and fulfill an important commitment to the rights of children.

At the CCRC, we continue to work towards the realization of the rights of all children in Canada. Here are some priorities and things to watch for over the next few months:
  • We continue to focus on Ending Violence Against Children in Canada. As a Pathfinder Country, we can and must do more to end violence against children. Check out our next webinar (June 29) with Dr. Debra Pepler and the Ombudsperson, Elisabeth Dahlin, from Sweden.
  • The 5th/6th UN Review of Canada by the Committee on the Rights of the Child continues. It has been delayed until May 2022. We are engaging with other NGOs to work collaboratively to make this process matter in Canada both to the public and to government officials.
  • We wrapped up our first annual Children Write! competition. Thank you to all who submitted entries. We will be reading the submissions this summer and announcing the winning entries in the fall.
  • We are launching a research corner, profiling up-to-date child rights research. Let us know if you have something we should highlight.
  • And stay tuned for our children's book corner, where we will profile books this year on anti-racism for children and youth, with a focus on how these books can empower young people as they realize their rights.
As always, please be in touch if you want to connect on children's rights in Canada.

All the best,

Kate Butler, CCRC Chair
