EVAC: Physical punishment study

An article was published yesterday in The Lancet that reviews all prospective longitudinal studies on physical punishment punished since 2002. It was co-authored by Dr. Joan Durrant, a CCRC member and partner. The review was led by a team at University College London and Dr. Elisabeth Gershoff. This review is important because it follows children over time, assessing their behaviour and well-being as they grow. Their initial behaviour and well-being were controlled for, so we can determine whether the physical punishment made things better or worse over time. None of the 69 studies reviewed found any positive outcomes of physical punishment and most found that it was detrimental to children’s development.
