Webinar: Children at the Core : Stonechild V Canada – The Fight for Indigenous and Children’s Rights Through Stonechild and Other Class Actions

Speakers: Caitlin Ohama-Dargus (Associate Counsel with Murphy Battista LLP) and Cheyenne Stonechild (Lawyer -Member of the Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation)

Description: This webinar will discuss the history of class actions in relation to advocating for the rights of Indigenous children in Canada. The webinar will particularly discuss the role of class action lawsuits in advocating for change in many systems of government that largely impact Indigenous children such as the child welfare system. This presentation will feature lawyers Cheyenne Stonechild and lawyers from Murphy Battista who will discuss the instrumental ways Indigenous children are using their voice in these class action lawsuits through the application of the UN Convention on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) and the UN Convention on the Rights of the child, particularly UNCRC Articles 8,9,20,24, and 30.

Description: This webinar will focus on the unfolding of the Stonechild v. Canada class action that aimed to address the overrepresentation of off-reserve Indigenous children in the child welfare system. This has resulted in many of these children losing their cultural heritage, language, and identity. This presentation will provide participants with an overview of the legal and historical context regarding the overrepresentation of off-reserve Indigenous children in child welfare that has been addressed with the Stonechild v. Canada class action.

Webinar: Integrated Law Practice: A child’s-rights-based approach to health

Description: This webinar will address improving global health care access and outcomes for impoverished children in Canada. This webinar will provide participants with an outline of a specific child-rights-based approach to health called Integrated Law (IL) developed by Hélène (Sioui) Trudel, Lawyer. IL Lawyers will discuss how this approach brings social justice, equity, and inherent human dignity of the child. This webinar will feature a Q&A period following the presentation for 10-15 minutes.

Je vous écris pour vous inviter à un événement thématique sur la participation de l’enfant que nous sommes en train de préparer : “Accompagner la participation de l’enfant : Regards croisés entre la Tunisie et le Canada”. L’événement aura lieu à la Maison du développement durable de Montréal, le 29 septembre, de 9h00 à 12h00. On croyait que cela pourrait vous intéresser, surtout en raison de la thématique de la discussion, mais aussi parce que les organisations participantes sont des organisations (2 de Tunis, 2 de Montréal) que vous connaissez parce qu’elles sont impliquées dans le processus de création du référentiel de compétences clés en participation. En fait, on organise cet activité dans le cadre d’un mandat de coopération Sud/Nord (Dhouha et Rahma, de la Tunisie (Ado + et TFYE), sont actuellement au Canada). 😊

Il s’agit d’une une activité d’échange sur les initiatives d’organisations tunisiennes et canadiennes en accompagnement de processus participatifs avec des enfants et jeunes (adolescent.es). Cet événement thématique débutera par la présentation des organisations : Atlas – Centre de pédiatrie sociale en communauté de Côte-des-NeigeMotivation JeunesseADO+ et le Tunisian Forum for Youth Empowerment – TFYE; et favorisera par la suite un espace de discussion et de réflexion sur le rôle d’accompagnement à la participation joué par les personnes professionnelles qui travaillent avec des enfants et des adolescent.es. Il y aura un temps pour des discussions et des réflexions partagées, pour lesquelles la participation de toutes les personnes présentes sera encouragée. On va éviter d’avoir des présentations trop formelles/académiques, on veut plutôt créer un espace de partage d’idées et des réflexions basées sur comment nous pouvons accompagner la participation des enfants et adolescent.es et quelle devrait être notre rôle : quels sont les défis que nous rencontrons, ce qui fonctionne et ce qui ne fonctionne pas, les questions que nous devrions nous poser avant déclencher tout processus de participation, les compétences que nous devons voir renforcées pour bien jouer ce rôle, etc.
