Children and the right to housing: Exploring opportunities and challenges for children and families

Join the CCRC as we host Sahar Raza (National Right to Housing Network), Katłįà Lafferty (National Indigenous Housing Network (NIHN) Co-Chair) and Kaitlin Schwan (Women’s National Housing & Homelessness Network) as they discuss children and families’ right to housing. Panelists will talk about a number of topics, including the legislated right to housing, and new access to justice mechanisms, such as the upcoming rights-based Review Panels this year.

Bios of the speakers:

Katłįà is a member of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation from Somba K’e (Yellowknife), Northwest Territories. She is currently an uninvited guest on the occupied and unceded lands of the Coast Salish peoples in lək̓ʷəŋən territory where she is in her fourth year of Common Law and Indigenous Legal Orders with the University of Victoria. She is the Co-Chair of the National Indigenous Housing Network (https://womenshomelessness.ca/nihn/).

She is also the author of the fictional novel “This House is Not a Home”.

Sahar Raza is the Director of Policy and Communications at the National Right to Housing Network and sits on Oxfam Canada’s Board of Directors. As a daughter of immigrants and racial justice advocates, she is deeply committed to amplifying marginalized voices and advancing practical pathways to social and environmental justice. She has spent over a decade researching and tackling pressing human rights issues rooted in colonialism, discrimination, and privatization. Sahar now works to end homelessness and implement human rights both locally and abroad through community-centred public policy, communications, and access to justice.

Dr. Kaitlin Schwan is Executive Director of the Women’s National Housing and Homelessness Network and a Senior Researcher at the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness. She teaches social policy at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Social Work, where she is appointed Assistant Professor, Status Only. She is the former Senior Researcher for the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing and Director of Research for The Shift. Dr. Schwan’s research focuses on homelessness prevention and human rights, particularly for women and youth.
