Our second annual writing competition is underway! It is a chance for children and young people to engage with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC) in English and French, and reflect on how it matters in their own lives. This contest is open to children and young people in Canada ages 7-17.
If you have any questions, please email the CCRC: email@example.com
Submissions accepted in English and French.
This year’s theme & writing prompts:
An important part of the Convention is Article 12, which states that children and young people have the right to express their opinions to decision-makers, and be supported by the adults in their lives to ensure they have opportunities to do this. In turn, decision-makers are required to listen and take these opinions seriously when making changes to the laws and rules that affect the lives of children and young people. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that too often, this has not been the case – children and young people have not been asked their opinions, or given equal access to decision-makers.
With this in mind, the CCRC is asking participants to consider the following questions:
1) Describe your vision for a child-friendly community.
2) Do you feel heard when you speak about issues that you care about? Can you provide an example of how you’ve used your voice, and what happened as a result? 3) What do you think decision makers can do to ensure that children are heard and included in the decision-making process in matters that concern them?
4) Is there a book or author that has helped you learn about your rights or inspired you to get involved in an issue that you care about? What was the book or who was the author? How did the book or author impact you?
Note: Submissions can focus on one or more questions. Please send in proposals, letters, essays (or creative pieces like short stories, plays and poems) addressing these questions.
Single person or group submissions per age category will be accepted.
Prizes in each age group sponsored by The Love of Reading Foundation.*
Contest runs November 4th, 2021 to April 1st, 2022
