In 2011 CCRC chose to honour Les Horne’s lifetime of achievement and commitment to children by presenting his family with a Child Rights Champion award in his memory.
CHILD RIGHTS CHAMPION: LES HORNE
Les Horne lived out his respect for the rights of children in a lifetime of work with children and fighting for changes when they were treated unfairly. Les pioneered in: giving children a voice in what happens to them in child welfare and youth justice; treatment in community homes instead of institutions; individualized plans for young people with many needs; and putting children first in government policies. Among other achievements, Les Horne was the first provincial Children’s Advocate in Canada and he was a leader in getting the Convention on the Rights of the Child adopted.
